Their Story
Rima, Zeke, and Zack
Rima, the kinkajou, came to live at Wildworks in 1997 after being confiscated as an illegal pet. She lived alone for a few years until two brother kinkajous housed at Sea World in San Diego needed to find a new home. Zeke and Zack were hand-raised by people and adjusted quickly upon their arrival at Wildworks. But when it came time to introduce them to Rima, we wondered if she would have any problems accepting them as cage mates. We began to introduce them slowly, but for Rima it was love at first sight and she actually became so possessive that she wouldn't let anyone get near them. She slept with one arm around each male. Now she shares them with us but is one bossy little lady, always reminding us who’s in charge. Kinkajous are omnivorous and Rima, Zeke, and Zack are fed a varied diet, but fruit is always their first choice. They will turn upside down when they eat, often hanging from their prehensile tails so as not to lose any of the juice. This is a natural behavior because in the wild they obtain most of their moisture from fruit. Their favorite foods are bananas—and blueberry muffins! |
