Her Story
This sharp-shinned hawk came to us in July 2001 via the Wildlife Way Station. A bird native to Southern California, he was found locally as a fledgling being mobbed by a flock of crows. The birds had already blinded his right eye by the time he was rescued. We began working with him immediately, hoping that he might be trained to participate in our outreach programs. However, knowing that sharp-shinned hawks are skittish by nature, we weren’t surprised when Hogan wasn’t able to adjust to traveling to our wildlife events. Our training did paid off, however, because our little hawk is comfortable being handled on the glove and is often taken for walks or perched outside to soak up the sunshine.
