Their Story
We received a cell phone call in spring 2006 from a motorist who was driving in Woodland Hills and had just witnessed an opossum being struck by a car. Could we help? We rushed to the scene but, sadly, the opossum had been killed. Then we noticed that her stomach was moving and for a moment we thought she was still breathing. Upon closer inspection, we discovered ninebaby opossums still nursing in her pouch! The babies were furred but not old enough to be on their own and needed to be warm and fed with a bottle, so we took them back with us to Wildworks to care for them. All the orphans survived and eventually were released except for Gizmo and Gadget. These two brothers were the runts of the litter so we decided to care for them here and share them with you as ambassadors in our wildlife education programs. |
